The Paraguayan War (1864–70) was the deadliest and most extensive interstate war ever fought in Latin America in which Paraguay lost an estimated 60-70% of its total population. Although 150 years has passed, the conflict has left a strong mark on the Paraguayan collective consciousness.

  • Cerro Cora where the last battle was fought and Lopez cried his last words, “I die with my country!”
  • Sites to the east of Asuncion, including Piribebuy, Campamento Cerro Leon, Vapor Cue, and others.
  • Sites and museums in Asuncion, such as Lopez Palace, Patheon of Heroes, and La Recoleta Cemetary

The Chaco War (1932-35) was fought between Bolivia and Paraguay over control of the Gran Chaco region. More than 50,000 Bolivians and 35,000 Paraguayans lost their lives, the majority of which died from thirst, malaria, and other diseases.

  • The Chaco region offers multiple sites with forts, trenches, and museums with artifacts from the war, including Fortin Boqueron, Fortin Toledo, Fortin Nanawa, and others.

Paraguayan Pantanal & Conservation Center

The trip starts by arriving at the military airport in Asuncion for a very early departure towards Bahia Negra. As the landing strip in Bahia Negra is packed dirt (not cement), the plane will be cancelled or delayed if weather does not permit a safe landing. From Bahia Negra you will travel in a private motorboat 40km up-river, past the border point where Paraguay, Brazil and Bolivia meet, to the Tres Gigantes Biological Station.

Tres Gigantes (Three Giants) is a conservation and investigation center on a 15,000 hectare preserve. This part of the Pantanal, the largest wetland in the world, is one of the few sites in the world where the visitor may see the three most-endangered species in Paraguay, known as the “three giants” – the Giant Armadillo, the Giant River Otter, and the Giant Anteater. While at Tres Gigantes you can hike, observe and photograph birds and wildlife, photographic safari, boat or fish on the river, or simply relax in one of the hammocks.
