The Paraguayan War (1864–70) was the deadliest and most extensive interstate war ever fought in Latin America in which Paraguay lost an estimated 60-70% of its total population. Although 150 years has passed, the conflict has left a strong mark on the Paraguayan collective consciousness.

The Chaco War (1932-35) was fought between Bolivia and Paraguay over control of the Gran Chaco region. More than 50,000 Bolivians and 35,000 Paraguayans lost their lives, the majority of which died from thirst, malaria, and other diseases.
- The Chaco region offers multiple sites with forts, trenches, and museums with artifacts from the war, including Fortin Boqueron, Fortin Toledo, Fortin Nanawa, and others.
